Although I predominantly teach on the electric guitar, I can also cater for acoustic and classical players too, and the concepts and ideas I teach can be applied to any genre. My personal areas of expertise lie in rock, heavy metal and shred guitar.
A guitar is a must! For face to face lessons at my home studio, I can provide amplification, though it is recommended that electric guitarists own one of these too for their home practice requirements.
For online lessons, access to a device on which to view the lessons will be needed, as well as amplification if required for your guitar and an internet connection. Otherwise you'll just need enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!
Not at all! Some of the greatest guitarists got where they were without knowing a scrap of music theory. This isn't because of unattainable talent or magic though - in fact there are a heap of tricks and techniques out there that will get you a long way without ever having to bury your head in a theory book, and I can show you how.
That said, a little knowledge goes a long way! Music theory can be a daunting and deep subject, but if you take the time to unlock some of it's secrets, the payoffs can be immense. I can make the process less painful by focussing on the parts of theory that are relevant to what you want to play, and cutting out all the things that you won't need.
It's true there are loads of great tutorial videos out there to help you learn, and I would encourage you to take advantage of that resource. But these videos have to come in a "one size fits all" format, and can't account for the nuances of each individual player. A dedicated tutor, however, can fully dissect your technique and point out the often tiny changes needed to make big improvements. This could save you literally years of pain.... I speak from experience!
When practicing the guitar, regular, short practice sessions will do you much better than a long session every now and again, and the same applies to taking lessons. I would recommend weekly lessons to get the most out of your tuition.
However, if you're just looking for a lesson or two to answer a question that's been bugging you, or to learn a particular song, then I'm more than happy to help.
